The advance edition of the book (which the publishers sent free to lots of mathematicians to get them to adopt the book) contained a horrible printing error.  Over half the figures were mangled, many to the point that they just don't make any sense.  Unfortunately, most copies on the used book market are from this mis-printing.  Before buying, look at the figure on page 15 -- if there are no subscripts on the bold face "b"'s, you have a defective copy.
