Professor Irene Gamba has been invited by the Association for Women in Mathematics and Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) to be the 2014 Sonia Kovalevsky Lecturer. The Kovalevsky Lectures honor women who have made fundamental and sustained contributions to applied or computational mathematics.

Irene will deliver the lecture at the 2014 SIAM Annual Meeting in Chicago in July 2014.

Efraim P. Armendariz

Efraim P. Armendariz

It is with great sadness that the department announces the passing of Professor Efraim Armendariz. Efraim died on Wednesday 13th February after a battle with cancer. Efraim had been with the department since 1966 and was Chairman from 1991--2007. Under his leadership the department's stature rose nationally and internationally.

In his time in the department, Efraim was heavily involved in programs to enrich the mathematics experience for undergraduates at UT, as well as programs that impacted mathematics education state wide. For example, Efraim was instrumental in establishing the Emerging Scholars Program at the University of Texas, and he was an active supporter and participant of the UTeach program.

He will be sorely missed by his colleagues in the department, and in the larger University community.

A celebration of Efraim's life will be held on Saturday, February 23, 10am at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 3003 Northland Dr. Austin, TX 78757

Ted Odell

Ted Odell

It is with great sadness that the department announces the passing of Professor Ted Odell who died suddenly on January 9th 2013. Ted had been with the Department of Mathematics since 1977, and since 2005 held the John T. Stuart III Centennial Professorship of Mathematics. He was also the Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies.

On Saturday January 19th, an event, "The Celebration of The Life of Ted Odell" was held in Room MAI 212 of the Main Building of the U.T. campus. Speeches to a packed room were given by a family member, colleagues in the department and two of Ted's co-authors. It was also announced that Ted's family has generously started a "The Ted Odell Excellence Fund in Mathematics."

His death leaves a huge void in the department, and he will be sorely missed by his colleagues there and in the larger University community.

Thirteen faculty members in Geometry/Topology has been awarded a new, highly competitive, RTG grant from the NSF. Over a five year span, this award will provide $2.5M to enhance the training of undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers in Geometry and Topology.

Irene Gamba

Gamba Recieves the 2012-13 ICES Distinguished Research Award

August 20, 2012

Prof. Gamba is the 2012-13 recipient of the ICES Distinguished Research Award. The award is given to ICES core faculty who have demonstrated a sustained level of distinguished research in computational sciences and engineering. The award provides $25,000 per year for up to four years of discretionary funds to support research within the Institute.

Blumberg, Chen and Neitzke Have Received NSF Career Awards

Three of our faculty members, A. Blumberg, T. Chen and A. Neitzke have received Career Awards from NSF this year. In addition, Thomas Chen has received the 2010 Annales Henri Poincare Prize, which is an annual best paper award from the journal "Annales Henri Poincare" of the Institut Henri Poincare, Paris. The award winning paper is "Quantitative Estimates on the Binding Energy for Hydrogen in Non-Relativistic QED", AHP Vol 11, 1487-1544.

Engquist Receives 2012 AMS-SIAM Birkhoff Prize

Bjorn Engquist has been awarded the 2012 AMS-SIAM George David Birkhoff Prize in Applied Mathematics, "for his contributions to a wide range of powerful computational methods over more than three decades," the prize citation says. "His work blends mathematical analysis, modeling, and computation, and has led to numerical tools with enormous impact across a broad range of applications, including aerodynamics, acoustics, electromagnetism, computational fluid mechanics, and computational geoscience." Babuska Receives 2012 AMS Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement

Ivo M. Babuska has been awarded the 2012 AMS Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement, "for his many pioneering advances in the numerical solution of partial differential equations over the last half century." The prize citation goes on to say: "In his work on finite element methods, Babuska has developed and applied mathematics in profound ways to develop, analyze, and validate algorithms which are crucial for computational science and engineering. In so doing, he has helped to define that field, and has had a great impact on the modern world. A constant characteristic of Babuska's work is the combination of deep and imaginative mathematical analysis with a constant concern for the practical implications of his work for engineering applications." J.Duthie Awarded

City of Austin won WTS Award

March 24, 2010

The City of Austin recently won WTS International's Innovative Project Solutions Award for its piloting of experimental bicycle facilities. The pilot study, led by UT researchers Randy Machemehl and Jennifer Duthie, has shown shared road pavement markings reduces motorist-bicyclist conflicts.

Simons Postdoctoral Fellowship at UT Math

November 7, 2009

For Fall 2010 the Department of Mathematics will offer one 3-year postdoctoral fellowship supported by the Simons Foundation. This position carries a stipend of $70,000 plus travel, et al for three years with a requirement to teach three classes, including one at graduate level. The main constraint is that the successful candidate should have received their Ph.D. within 12 months proceeding his/her appointment.

Gamba, together with chemical engineering Professor Charles Mullins and chemistry Professor Allen Bard have received about $2.5 million grants to identify new materials that will efficiently absorb sunlight and split water into clean hydrogen fuel, which could power cars and be used to generate electricity.
